Pilates Instructor Training FAQ
Q: How many trainings are required to become a Balanced Body certified Pilates instructor?
A: In order to become a comprehensively certified Pilates instructor, the student must complete 10 modules: Movement Principles, Mat 1, Mat 2, Mat 3, Reformer 1, Reformer 2, Reformer 3, Cadillac/Trapeze Table, Chair and Barrels. Additionally, an anatomy course is required, such as Balanced Body’s Anatomy in Three Dimensions, or an approved equivalent. Trainings average 16 hours/2 days in length each. Once the above course work is completed, along with the requisite practice hours, the student may apply to test out.
Q: Do I have to take the trainings in order?
A: While it is possible at this time to take the trainings in any order, we strongly recommend the order listed above, as the foundational knowledge established in Movement Principles is interwoven throughout the subsequent trainings and built upon as the original Mat repertoire becomes exercises that involve props and apparatus. At minimum, Movement Principles should be taken before any other training.
Q: Can I get certified in Reformer only?
A: Yes, it is possible to test out as a Balanced Body certified Reformer instructor, if the student has completed Movement Principles, all 3 Reformer trainings and anatomy, plus practice hours. The same applies to Mat as a certification in its own right, and there is a Mat + Reformer certification as well.
Understand that the above partial certifications do not address the entirety of the Pilates movement system, and we do not recommend them, nor does Longevity Club employ instructors with less than the full comprehensive certification. The level of certification a business requires for employment is at its discretion.
Q: Do I have to have prior Pilates experience?
A: No, but we recommend at least 10 Pilates Mat and/or Reformer classes before beginning the certification journey.
Q: Do I have to take all 4 courses during the Pilates Instructor Training Retreat?
A: No, each of the 4 is an individual registration. We offer them consecutively for purposes of convenience to those who travel to participate, but moreover, the 8-day immersion makes for a deeply enriched learning experience.
Q: How do I satisfy the anatomy requirement?
A: While Longevity Club does not currently offer an anatomy course, you can find a training that works for you at Balanced Body’s Education Finder above.
Q: How many practice hours are required to test out?
A: Each student must complete and record 20 Mat personal practice sessions, 65 Reformer personal practice sessions, 65 observation hours and 220 teaching hours. Your record of these completed practice hours must be submitted with your application to test out.
Q: What is the final test out like?
A: The test out process consists of a written test and a practical test. A program for the practical portion is provided one week prior to the test out date. You will be observed teaching that program by one of our Balanced Body Educators. You may teach an individual of choice, or request in advance that your Educator provide you with someone to teach.
