Recently, we did the hosting and had the pleasure of chatting with Duvet's CEO and co-founder, Taylor Gates, at Longevity. We bonded over our mutual purpose of serving Charleston with personalized care and passion for carving a space in the community that makes people feel right at home.

What inspired you to get into this industry? Were you always a Charlestonian?
Most of our team already came from a hospitality background, and we believe that serving people is the greatest act one can do. We get to do it in a fun way by providing unique experiences for our guests and represent the best city in America: Charleston. We truly consider ourselves blessed to have all found each other and work in this space. I am not a Charlestonian, but have been here for almost 12 years now. Some of us have been here for longer. I think I can speak for our entire team when I say that once we stepped foot in this city, we fell in love right away and never looked back. Charleston is home, and now we get to host people and make a house feel like a home for them. What a treat!

StayDuvet is truly the epitome of southern hospitality; how do you continue to create an authentic experience for your guests?
We are not perfect, but we strive to be the best we can for our guests and hosts. The hardest challenge we face is serving two clients. We have the homeowners that offer us their homes. and the guests that we simultaneously promise and deliver an exceptional experience to. Unlike restaurants and hotels, we have two sides to serve, which can make our job extra difficult - but we love a challenge! 

The name Duvet came from the thought that everybody has when they go somewhere to stay, “I wonder if the Duvet was cleaned.” We at Duvet have a clean duvet guarantee for every stay. Cleanliness, along with an inspection before and after each stay, helps us keep our quality control up. We also provide a 24/7 concierge service for all our guests and only promote local neighborhood businesses. It is our job to stimulate the local economy and make sure our 100,000+ visitors per year support our fellow neighbors' businesses. We are very proud of this. So, yes, our guests truly do get to live like a local.

Some of our Longevity members split their time between Charleston and elsewhere. When not in Charleston, can they list their residence on Stay Duvet? How do they go about hosting?
Absolutely! We actually offer two divisions. Stay Duvet is for those who can get a legal short-term rental permit and can rent places on a nightly basis. We also have another division called Duvet Homes, which focuses on executive clientele and rents to those looking for 30+ day stays. We have found a niche for both markets. When it comes to fitness and health, what's your approach/outlook?
Well, my mother is a nutritionist and has shown me how important it is to eat well. The quality of food matters most, which is unfortunately harder to come by these days. I’ve learned that it’s not just what you eat, it’s also how you stay active and stimulate your body - it's truly a balance. The two are equally important and go hand-in-hand. I wish I was better about it myself, though! The thing about hospitality is, you forget to serve yourself because you are constantly serving others. (It gets addicting!) It is incredible to experience how exercise allows the mind to relax and think clearly, which has recently motivated me to get back into it. You take care of the body and in turn, that takes care of the mind. After that, all you have to focus on is your soul; but, I believe if surround yourself with good people, that alone feeds your soul.

I’m truly blown away by what Longevity has to offer. It reminds me of going to the top floor of a Four Seasons hotel and seeing that fitness/spa combination. It is truly such a need here in Charleston, and I am so glad Longevity has finally fulfilled that need.
